Kollywood 2009
Yuvan Shankar Raja
Oct 12th
It was when Rahman had conquered the King’s dominion by the mid 90’s and Ilayaraja had started coming to terms with not being the ruler anymore, this teenager hiked on a picnic that no one expected to turn into a new era of music. Sure, at 16, you are too naïve to take the bull by the horns and have a ride on it. But this teenager certainly had a bigger future which Kollywood conveniently didn’t see coming.
Though Aravindhan hardly took any notice, Yuvan certainly seemed to get a grip of things in just about three movies. With the bouncy Jyothika dancing away to the tunes of his in the scenically captured ‘churidhar anindhu’ or Surya crooning to his aching love in ‘Irava Pagala’, Poovellam Kettupar did send noises about somebody landing on Tamil music. After a couple of more forgettable scores, Yuvan seemed determined to prove his grit when A R Muradoss trusted him with Dheena. I can see what you are thinking; Murugadoss was not as huge a brand as he is today. But the combination proved lucky to Yuvan for it took away the skepticism that surmounts celebrities hailing from affluent families. Then came Thulluvatho Ilamai and later, Nandha.
Almost every music lover I knew invested in a copy of Thulluvatho Ilamai music cassette (people were yet to be introduced to CDs then) which was indeed worth the money, sabotaging all doubts about this musician who by then had emerged into a brand called ‘Yuvan Shankar Raja’.From his baby-walk days to the most recent season where his topical Telugu blockbuster ‘Oy’ is dancing on top of the charts, he has a journey defined more by music than commercialism. When I say that, I mean it’s refreshing to see him not investing much of his interests in films that start and end with the hero. I am not debating if music in such movies (where the story is made to make the hero
heroic) is inferior. It could have been a coincidence but Yuvan’s projects predominantly teamed him up with directors who preferred stories to heroes which is perhaps the reason why he did not have to meet dead ends while letting his experiments take over.I wonder what his personal favorite is. If I were to pick one, among a few others, I would hand pick the theme-track of 7G which am sure would definitely make a haunting memory in the minds of music lovers. What about Kadhal kondein or pudhupettai or the incorrigibly haunting ‘engeyo partha mayakkam’ from Yaaradi nee mohini? You ask. Sure, his compositions are unique yet carry a discernible difference from another which is perhaps why the best tracks by Yuvan seem to fall in completely different genres.
Engeyo Partha Mayakkam which is a blend of soft instrumentals playing in the backdrop of a love-struck mood is sweet to listen to and instantly dwelling while the husky tone of kadaloram from Kungumapoovum Konjumpuravum sizzles with the inexplicable desires of love. The two songs belong to different families of tunes yet beautifully bring about the different shades of love, almost setting in a state of trance where the mind wanders to the romantic phase of one’s life.
Talking of romance, who can forget the background score from 7G, especially that in the climax? It’s nothing less than a master piece and the BGM is one of the reasons why the movie still stands apart in the chronology of love stories in Tamil. That way, though greatly acclaimed for his flair for background scoring, an award exclusively in the category of background score from his home ground is yet to arrive, not to forget the Cyprus International Film festival for best musical score for Raam that couldn’t have suited anybody better. From the immensely youthful Chennai 28 to the rusty folk of paruthiveeran to the humanly heroic pudhupettai, Yuvan has hit the masses and the classes alike and has successfully been at it, even outside the horizons of romantic tunes.
With just about a decade to his musical resume’, what is surprising is that Yuvan has not yet hit the drums for the big-heads like Rajini or Kamal or even Vijay and yet has found his steps up the ladder to the top notch. Is it because he did not find an offer his way or is it a reason left better in the dark? Intriguing, considering how much Ilayaraja’s music had elevated the stardom of Rajini and Kamal. Speaking of which, to say he has followed the maestro’s footsteps would be a gross understatement for Yuvan has created his own path and his own style, along the way. He makes music that is intelligent, sensitive, humorous and real.
While, we still live in the world, where music was redefined by A R Rahman and memories of Ilayaraja are treasured, Yuvan has made himself a comfortable home – one he does not need to be insecure of being taken over. It looks like the night is still young for this lad to be partying and wow, the journey so far calls for a toast. With Bollywood, Tollywood and Kollywood, the future for Yuvan Shankar Raja is absolutely inviting and with him still hanging in there, we music lovers have more music calling.

Aadhavan Release? Asal And Vettaikaran Release?
Sep 30th

If sources are to be believed one biggie would be out of the Diwali race. We expected to see tough fight between Vijay’s ‘Vettaikkaran’ and Suriya’s ‘Aadhavan’ this time, but sadly things are turning out the other way round…
And the one who might miss this race will be our ‘Vettaikkaran’. With just seventeen days more for Diwali, the film has a lot to be done said the sources. A few talkie portions and a song, for which the crew plans to go to Australia, are remaining to be shot. With so much of field works and post productions works remaining, we wonder if it is possible for ‘Vettaikkaran’ to hit the floor on the festive day.
On the other hand, looks like Vijay wants the film to be perfect in everything and it’s not important to be released in a hurry. Sources further added that Sun Pictures have also settled the issues in favour of the actor. All right, this more or less clears the air and the film’s release for Diwali is doubtful…
So if not for Diwali when is the release uh? What do you think people? Will anyone release such a puffed up project on a normal day? So the next possible festive season is Pongal.
Our question now is ‘Will ‘Vettaikkaran’ play single handed with ‘Asal’- the biggie who is already waiting for Pongal release?’
So the bottom line is that, ‘Aadhavan’ is free to do a One Man Show this Diwali, while we might see the Clash of the Titans this Pongal…

Unnai Pol Oruvan Review: Common Man Review
Sep 18th

Be Like Me
Unnai Pol Oruvan- Kamal Hassan with Mohan Lal Combo
Direction: Chakri Toleti
Music: Shruthi Hassan (Background score is good, cant think as a first time composer and songs very nice)
A remake of hindi movie hit “A wednesday“… Not all the remake movie will give the same HIT in other language…therefore Our Kamal Hassan has the guts to remake this movie. What is so special? It deals with something that connects the lives of every Indian. It is unfortunate yet true that terrorism has become a reality and a part of our lives.
Kamal in his walk, body language and dialogue resembles the man living in your next door. Mohanlal should be appreciated for the maturity with which he had played the role. His emotional encounter with Kamal Haasan towards the climax is one among the many scenes that deserve applause.
Beside that, there are two officers where people should give applause too…their acting was real as a police officer. One of the guy is Ganesh Venkatraman who played as a sigh in Abiyum Naanum. Good Job guys!
And in this movie an unexpected thing happens there. Our common man teaches terrorists a lesson and proves the government that an eye for an eye will usher justice. He tells that the agony and frustration of a common man can lead to a disaster.
Even though this movie is not like other movies, it has a good message and feelings towards their own country against the terrorism.
Unnai Pol Oruvan is the film that will touch every Indian’s heart and remain as pertriotic person’s movie.
Everybody should be a common man like him to suggests a harsher remedy for terrorism.
My Rate: 3.8/ 5

Kanthaswamy Review: Kinda ‘Shivaji”swamy’Yo….
Aug 23rd
Starring: Vikram, Shriya, Prabhu, Vadivelu.
Direction: Susi Ganesan
Music: Devi Sri Prasad
Everybody was waiting for this movie and its just out 2 days before (21.8.09).
Basically, I would like to give a review from my point of view and not a full summary of the movie. Everybody have their own perception about it. Good or Bad its their taste…
Kanthswamy is another name of Lord Murugan, there are few actually… The story is about how a person @ a group can help poor people behalf of GOD… by using the name of God they helping people who in difficulties. As usual, they also get the money from bad people who hide black moneys @ money from illegal activities. Okay, Thats the short synopsis that i can give. For more, Go and watch the movie!
Now my part:
Vikram: is a good actor as we all know and in this movie he prove himself as a good singer as well. The song that he sang is nice to hear, his voice really match for actors. Maybe he could get a chance to sing for others, who knows! He acting in this movie really good. Cannot condemn.
Shriya: emmm, She is good dancer and pretty girl, but not for this movie. She think she is kollywood’s Shakira, i think.. most of the songs, she shake her hip only..dont know why they choreograph her like that. i pity Shriya. I only like her scene at the end, when she go to a temple with vikram. That time she look nice.
Devi Sri Prasad: Songs are Superb!
Some visual good and the choreograph is out..totally. Actresses wears is sexy, too much… Director and costume designers, hope not to miss use them…
Susi Ganesan: I saw his interview today, he said he had showed logic to viewers as the superhero movie will make people to believe about whatever scene they take. how he fly, how he fight, etc etc… but 1 thing i realize and its not logic… How come the baddies forget their pistol or gun or whatever it is… when they planned to kill him in Maxico ??? They were holding their pistols, after a car hit try to hit them, they jump, they fall, they straight away use hand to fight? why not they jz pick up the pistols and shoot him down? aaarrrrrggggghhhh! Ithu than Tamil Paadum! Prove panithangge’la…. (this is what Tamil movie). I suggest to take a movie like Shankar sir if its a big budget movie.
Lastly, without comedy i think people will get bored because the movie quite long, without Vadivelu there is no comedy…Hats off for him and for his comedy in Kanthaswamy…Really Funny!!!
EVEN ITS LIKE LITTLE BIT SHIVAJI THE BOSS’s STORY (helping poor people) , BUT IN A NEW WAY AND UNIQUE IDEA…SHOULD APPRECIATE THE TEAM FOR THIS ATTEMPT.
That’s all my point of view, rate 6.5/10.

He keep supporting Dr.Burn, cause he like the way Dr.Burn sing a song and the clearance in his rap, Dharan mentioned in one of his interview. Start with Sivi, Laadam, and one song in Yaaredi Nee Mohini. Latest update is, he sang a song in Aadhavan movie, starrer Suriya and in Harris Jayaraj music. Cool right? Emmm…Good luck bro! Your ZuraZamaram was a superb.
Emcee Jazz not forgettable, he is unique with his voice…his first entrance was in Kuruvi the same happy New Year song with his kaigalz. After that, he came in Laadam (Makkez song in Dharan’s music) and currently in Masilamani (OdiOdiVilayada in D.Iman’s Music) im not sure his future projects, hope he get more chance as well… His new album Kavthai Gunder is doing good business and the songs superb as well. Thaniye with Neha Bhasin is my favourite. Anyone know where can buy his KG shirt? emmm…. Keep Rocking jazz!
